Caramel apples are a fall staple. I love making classic caramel apples, but to be honest, they are kind of hard to eat. Instead, I like to make a Caramel Apple Board, so you can dip apple slices into caramel and lots of delicious toppings! The caramel slices are easier to eat and the board is SO fun!

A caramel apple board is perfect for fall parties, game day, play dates, Halloween, or a fun family night in! Kids and adults love getting in on the action. I dip, you dip, we dip!

And don’t worry, building a caramel board is easy. I am going to share all of my tips so you can impress all of your friends and family this fall!

The Basics

Before we get into how to make the board, let’s talk about the basic supplies you will need.

  • Board– you can use a large wood board, cutting board, platter, or even baking sheet to build your board.
  • Apples– Of course, you need apples. Get a variety of apples: granny smith, honeycrisp, gala, fuji, and golden delicious are all good options. Kroger always has a great selection of fresh apples. Plan on one apple per person.
  • Apple slicer or sharp knife– for cutting the apples into slices.
  • Lemons or Lime-Lime Soda– to prevent the apple slices from browning.
  • Wood skewers– these are great for sticking into the apple slices so you can easily dip them into caramel.
  • Caramel– you can buy caramel dip at the store (it’s in the produce section at Kroger) or make salted caramel sauce.
  • Little bowls or ramekins– for all of the toppings!

Toppings

The toppings are the best part. Go crazy and put out several toppings so there is something for everyone. Here are some ideas:

  • Chopped nuts
  • Coconut
  • Crushed graham crackers
  • Crushed Oreos
  • Sprinkles
  • Toffee pieces
  • Mini M&M’s
  • Chocolate chips
  • Granola
  • Peanut butter
  • Melted chocolate

I like to get all of the toppings out before I start assembling the board. You want to see what you are working with.

How to Make a Caramel Apple Board

Ok, now it’s time to assemble the board! You can make a small board or a large board, depending on how many people you are feeding. This board is very easy to customize.

  • First, get out your board and bowls for toppings. Fill the bowls with the caramel and toppings. Arrange them on the board.
  • Slice the apples. To prevent them from browning you can squeeze fresh lemon juice on them. Alternatively, you can soak the apple slices in lemon-lime soda (Sprite or 7-Up) for 10 minutes. Drain off the soda, you don’t have to rinse them.
  • Place the apple slices on the board with the caramel and toppings. Set out the skewers.
  • Carefully poke a skewer through an apple slice, dip the apple in caramel, and then roll in desired toppings.
  • Enjoy!
